Pontiac

Pontiac is the county seat of Oakland County. First settled in 1818, Pontiac incorporated as a city in 1861. Almost 150 years later, the city has evolved into a diverse blend of residential, business, automotive, industrial and high-tech companies. Pontiac is home to General Motors, three major hospitals, a revitalized downtown nightclub district, the Oakland County Pioneer & Historical Society, an 18-hole golf course, several lakes and parks, historically unique homes and office buildings, and hosts a number of festivals and special events throughout the year. The Pontiac Regional Chamber is the oldest chamber of commerce in Oakland County celebrating 100 years in 2004.

Pontiac is one of 11 communities participating in Main Street Oakland County (MSOC), an economic development program specifically targeted to provide technical assistance to the 30 traditional downtowns in the County.  These historic commercial districts each have a unique sense of place which, as a part of a national trend, are becoming increasingly popular as places to do business, shop, dine, live and experience family activities.

MSOC is now a partner with the National Trust's Main Street Center, a program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Founded in 1980, the National Trust's Main Street Center's Four Point Approach of: Organization, Design, Promotion and Economic Restructuring, has been successfully utilized in over 2,000 downtowns in 40 states since 1980.
