History

Known as Ossewa Township for its first 17 days, Southfield Township came into existence on July 12, 1830. Franklin Village, extablished in late 1828, was an early community.

The breakup of the original 36 square miles of Southfield Township began with the incorporation of the City of Lathrup in May of 1953, followed by the Village of Franklin in November and finally the Village of Bingham Farms in 1955 and the Village of Beverly Hills in 1958. The City of Southfield was incorporated on September 16, 1957.
